MAWLAMYINE- Kinmoonchyon/Shwenettaung Dam in the Athayan River will supply 6.5 million gallons of drinking water daily to Mawlamyine in 2022, according to Mon State Development Committee.

“Currently, the Athayan River is supplying 900,000 gallons of water per day without treating it first. We plan to treat 4 million gallons of water per day. The amount of water can provide for 14 wards in Mawlamyine Township. If the two dams: Shwenettaung and Kinmoonchyon are to combine, all wards in Mawlamyine Township will enjoy clean drinking water. For now, Shwenettaung dam is supplying the water treatment. The Water Resources Utilization Department is now installing the machines and repairing the pipe lines. Upon completion, the whole township will get the purified water. The implementation of Treatment Water project from Athayan River will finish in 2020 by spending the government’s budget. The remaining project of water supply from Kinmoonchyon dam will be implemented with the assistance of Asia Development Bank (ADB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It will be five-year project which will complete in 2022. The preparation of Shwenettaung Dam is already finished,” said Tin Ko Ko, Deputy Superintending Engineer from Mon State Development Committee.

The Mon State government plans to supply purified drinking water to all wards at a rate of Ks 250 per unit and they will be offering the tender for that project. The tender winner will have to sign the agreement with the Mon State Government before September, according to the Mon State Development Committee.

“The Mon State Development Committee is now supplying water to us with Ks 150 per unit. As we had faced the water shortage problem 10 years ago, we are very happy to hear the supplying of drinking water because we spent about Ks 1 million for building the water pipe lines from three water storage tanks in Maung Ngan Ward via Athayan River. However, it is needed for greater transparency in the huge project,” said Soe Myint from Thiri Myaing ward.
