There are over 1 million eligible voters in Kachin State for the 2020 general election and there will be no polling station inside military areas, said Tun Aung Khaing, Kachin State election officer and deputy director.

In the state, 889 polling booths are due to be built but there will be six more.

There will be no polling booth in the military areas but there will be only one outside the military station.

“There will be no polling stations inside the military areas. But there will be one in a new ward in Putao. It is a place for retired military personnel. It is not inside the military area. What is special in the 2020 election is we have to consider the health sector because of the Covid-19 pandemic,” Tun Aung Khaing said.

There were 870,000 voters in Kachin State in the 2015 general election. Now, the number has exceeded over 200,000. Out of over 1 million voters for the coming election in Kachin State, around 700,000 are Bamar, Shan, Lisu and Yawan people who are eligible to vote for four ethnic affairs ministers.

There are 418,455 Bamar, 207,358 Shan, 70,413 Lisu and 33,183 Yawan totaling 729,409.

Kachin State has 18 constituencies for Lower House of Parliament, 12 constituencies for Upper House of Parliament, 36 constituencies for State Parliament and four constituencies for ethnic affairs ministers. Eighteen political parties are due to run for the 2020 general election scheduled to take place on November 8.
