The government will spend K929 billion (US$663 million) on implementing a five-year Multi-Sectoral National Plan of Action for Nutrition (MS-NPAN) from 2018-2019 fiscal year to 2022-2023 FY, according to the first meeting of the National Level Leading Committee for Nutrition Development in Myanmar held at Novotel Hotel in Yangon on November 26.

The meeting, chaired by the Union Minister for Health and Sports, approved the MS-NPAN.

The five-year long national scale project was drawn with the aim to effectively address the malnutrition issue in Myanmar in accord with the prescribed guidelines and instructions.

In January 2017, the State Counsellor called a meeting on the national nutrition strategy with heads of relevant departments and development partner organizations in Pakokku Township, Magway Region. Then, Nutrition Sector Coordination Group was formed under National Level Leading Committee for Nutrition Development in Myanmar and Development Assistance Coordination Unit-DACU with the participation of union ministers from the ministries of health and sports, agriculture, livestock and irrigation, education and social welfare, relief and resettlement.

MS-NPAN involves six areas. For four sectors in health, education, agriculture and irrigation and social welfare, each sector has one area. Governance has one area and monitoring and evaluation one area.

In implementing the four sectors, K285 billion will be spent in health sector, K204 billion for the ministry of education, K197 billion for the ministry of agriculture, livestock and irrigation and K225 billion for the ministry of social welfare, relief and resettlement.
