Japan to send special delegation to observe 2020 election

YANGON- In order to observe and support General Election 2020, which will be held in Myanmar on November 8th, Japanese government will send its special delegation led by Sasakawa Yohei, says Japanese Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu.

The Japanese Foreign Minister said that he strongly believed Myanmar would hold a free and fair general election.

Moreover, Japan will be providing the ink which can’t be easily removed to prevent possible double-voting fraud at the polling stations across the country.

The Japanese government and the UNDP announced on August 14th that 113,000 ink bottles worth Yen 181 million will be used in the upcoming general election.

Likewise, the Japanese government had sent its delegation members aiming to observe the previous general election-2015 and then they provided electoral aids to Myanmar.

Japanese Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu paid a two-day visit in Myanmar from August 24 to 25th after launching the visit of three countries in the Mekong region.

During his visit in Myanmar, he met with the State Counsellor and the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services separately.

At the meeting with the State Counsellor and the Japanese Foreign Minister, they exchanged views on promotion of bilateral relations and cooperation between Myanmar and Japan, Japan’s continued support to Myanmar in the fight against the COVID-19, continued arrangements of relief flights for citizens of both countries and gradual reopening of cross-border travel between Myanmar and Japan, sending an observer team and Japan’s assistance for the general elections to be held in November in Myanmar, Japan’s continued support for Myanmar Government’s efforts for democratization, peace and national reconciliation processes, plans to cooperate between Myanmar and Japan to facilitate the rapid economic recovery of Myanmar in the post COVID-19 period, further enhancement of investment and cooperation between Myanmar and Japan, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
