A major obstacle to Myanmar's economy is illegal trade, and so long as illegal trade sector remains strong, it will be a great hindrance to legal businesses, state-run newspapers quoted Vice President Myint Swe as saying.

The vice president, also chairman of Private Sector Development Committee, made the comment in his speech at the 10th coordination meeting of the committee held in Nay Pyi Taw on August 1.

Illegal imports through the border are threatening the existence of small and medium enterprises, and a 40-member Illegal Trade Eradication Steering Committee with 13 tasks was formed by the President Office on June 25 this year, he said.

Anti-illegal trade squads formed in nine regions and states close to the borders exposed 669 cases till June this year in which illegal goods worth K11.828 billion were confiscated, the vice president added.
