Historic SEA Games setback as both Myanmar men’s and women’s football teams miss semifinals

For the first time in the history of the SEA Games, both Myanmar’s men’s and women’s football teams failed to reach the semifinals.

At the 2025 Thailand SEA Games, Myanmar’s U-22 men’s team was eliminated from the tournament after losing both of their group-stage matches.

Myanmar’s women’s national team collected six points from three group matches, but missed out on a place in the semifinals due to an inferior head-to-head goal difference.

Although the Myanmar women’s team had reached the last four in every previous SEA Games, this time they faced their worst-ever result.

In the 12 SEA Games tournaments they have competed in, Myanmar’s women’s team finished as runners-up four times, third place seven times, and fourth place once.

Myanmar’s men’s team has won the SEA Games football title five times, making them the third most successful team in the tournament’s history, but they have not won a gold medal since 1973.
