As agricultural inputs are imported while dollar price is increasing, farmers have to suffer losses every year resulting from high production cost, said Lower House MP Myint Han Tun for Butalin Township Constituency.

The MP made the remark during a parliamentary meeting held in Nay Pyi Taw on December 7.

"Most farmers earn less income because of bean market collapse. To avoid any crop yield decrease they have to use compound fertilizers and pesticides we have never seen before. Amid their decreasing prices of their products, dollar price is also increasing. Due to high production cost, farmers make losses yearly. So they are unhappy. Some local famers went to neighbouring countries to work legally or illegally. For that, our country has to suffer. The life of farmers having to work abroad is heart touching.

He stressed the need to increase both quantity and quality of agricultural products because 70 percent of the country's population represents farmers and the country's major export is agricultural produce.

He also called for focus on ensuring that farmers buy quality agricultural inputs at fair prices.
