Continuous heavy rains since October 9 have caused flooding in several townships across Yangon Region, leading to severe traffic congestion that lasted late into the night.
Residents reported that floodwaters were particularly high in South Okkalapa, where vehicles were stranded and travel times were significantly delayed. “The water is very high in South Okkalapa. Cars are stuck. It takes about an hour to get from Tamwe Market to East Horse Racing Road,” said a Yangon resident.
Flooding was also reported in North Okkalapa, Kyee Myint Daing, Tamwe, Mayangone, and Thingangyun townships, with many roads becoming impassable. A taxi driver said that roads near Myanmar Plaza were also blocked, worsening the city’s traffic situation.
Similar traffic jams were observed at Chawdwin Kone traffic light and along Inya Road.
According to the 7 p.m. weather bulletin, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue in Yangon and nearby areas until noon on October 10. As of 9 p.m., water levels in some areas had not yet receded, and some public transport routes remained in operation despite the flooding.
