The first phase of Hanthawaddy international airport project will link with an expressway and second phase will link with an express railroad, according to state owned newspaper quoting an official from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

Officials from Myanmar and Japan made negotiations to organize a joint-ventured company to build the airport project and the project will be implemented with US$1.5 billion investment.

Department for Civil Aviation (DCA) will provide about 3,600 hectares of land for the new airport project and it will be linked with a railroad network.

“If the tender process is finished, we will sign an agreement in early 2020 to start the construction process,” said Ye Htut Aung, Deputy Director General of the DCA.

It will link with an expressway in first phase of the project and an express railroad in second phase. The government will assist the project and it will implement as early as possible.

“We are thinking to implement the project. We will think not only for the airport project but also for road transport and rail transport between Yangon and Hanthawaddy. In my view, Yangon International Airport is not enough to meet the demand if business is improved in Myanmar. Myanmar needs another international airport. So officials from the ministry are discussing with Japan to build the airport project,” said H.E Mr Ichiro Maruyama, Japanese ambassador for Myanmar.

Tender will be invited at Japan at the end of this year to choose the company to build the project.
