Currently, Goktwin Bridge in Nawnghkio Township, Shan State, allows only 36 tons of traffic, and it will take about one month for large trucks to pass through, said Deputy Minister for Construction Kyaw Lin.

The deputy minister made the remark about the bridge that was damaged in mine attacks by some armed groups in meeting with the media during the recession of a session of the Union Parliament held in Nay Pyi Taw on August 21.

"As soon as the bridge was blown up, we rushed to the scene. As the repair must be finished within five days, we sent four special bridge groups with over 200 people. They had to work day and night. Now, the repair has been finished. Last night, traffic started on the bridge. Currently, it can withstand only 36 tons. Most trucks going to Lashio are 48 tons. We will continue to try for them to be able to pass. It will take about one month," said the deputy minister.

He said full security was deployed during repair tasks and it will continue after the completion.

Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), Arakan Army (AA) and Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) carried out heavy and small weapon attacks on the Defence Services Technological Academy, Goktwin police post, toll gates, narcotic checkpoint and local battalion headquarters on the morning August 15. The attacks caused casualties of civilians and security troops and damaged or destroyed public property including Goktwin Bridge.

Lower House MP Stephen for Kengtung Township Constituency tabled a motion of denouncement of terror attacks and sympathy for the casualties on August 16.
