Floods and landslides may occur in coastal areas of Myanmar till September 5 due to rain clouds remained over from the storm in South China Sea, a low pressure area in the northwest of Bay of Bengal and generally strong monsoon season, said Hla Tun, Deputy Director for the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

“There will be a low pressure area and a storm in the South China Sea. The storm in South China Sea is moving westwards. It is likely to move to Vietnam coast. Coastal areas will have more rain till September 5,” he said.

Mon and Kayin states will have more rain and the rain clouds remained from the storm formed in South China Sea are not the rain clouds which crossed Myanmar from August 31, he said.

“It is the next storm but it will not be reached to Myanmar like the first one. It is reached to Gulf of Tonkin and is likely to make a U-turn to north-northeast. It is least likely to effect to Myanmar. More rain may pour down in coastal areas of Myanmar due to a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal and the effect of storm,” he said.

According to the observations made by the DMH on September 3, the low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Odisha-West Bengal Coasts still persists. Monsoon is strong to vigorous over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

Rain or thundershowers will be isolated heavy falls with regionally heavy falls in Bago, Yangon, Ayeyawady and Taninthayi regions and Rakhine, Kayin and Mon states, it said.

Occasional squalls with rough seas will be experienced off and along Myanmar Coasts. Surface wind speed in squalls may reach 40 mph. Wave height will be about 9 –13 feet off and along Myanmar coasts.

The DMH warned flash flooding and landslides may occur in highland areas due to strong winds and heavy rain.
