YANGON-flooding in early August affected over 60,000 people in five states and regions, says Phyu Le Le Tun, Director of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

“According to records till August 3rd, people from Kachin, Sagaing, Magway, Mandalay and Bago regions had to move onto flood relief camps and their relatives. We didn’t receive the list of flood victims from Kayin State and Tanithari Region. There was no transfer of households but water flowed to the low-lying wards in Kayin and Taninthari region. There are now 196 flood relief camps and the flood has affected over 16,000 households in five regions and states,” said Phyu Le Le Tun.

She also said that the ministry of social welfare, relief and resettlement provided cash assistance, masks, hand gel and soaps worth about Ks 196 million to the flood victims.

Floods are common in July and August. The Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement has warned that the people need to be cautious of the flash flooding, hill slides and landslides caused by incessant heavy downpours.
