Five villages known for glaze pot making in Kyaukmyaung Township, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, have formed a committee to help develop community-based tourism (CBT), said Soe Soe from the region CBT development board.

Aout 2,000 foreign tourists visit villages of Nwenyein, Shwetaik, Shwegon, Makhauk and Malar to study the making of glaze ware ever year. But little income is earned from such tourism, prompting the village authorities to form such a committee for CBT development.

"We have formed a committee for the development of CBT in five villages. About 2,000 foreign travelers visited those villages to study glaze making. But they left after study. We could not make money from tourism. Now we are planning to provide lodging for foreign tourists. We are building guesthouses. We will sell local products. We will seek income from CBT. The committee was established by those five villages for rural development tasks including health and education sectors," said Soe Soe.

On November 8 and 9, a group of eight foreign tourists spent their nights in Nwenyein Village a part of CBT project, which will then be implemented in four other villages.

In cooperation with the Sagaing Region government and private organizations, the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism is implementing six tour zone projects in the region. The projects will include famous pagodas and temples, ancient buildings, other interesting places and gift shops.
