Fish export prices remain low

From April to December, 2018, the fish export prices are relatively low compared with the same period last year, said Win Kyaing, Secretary General of Myanmar Fishery Federation (MFF).

Myanmar earned more than 497 million USD from exports of more than 370,000 metric tons. Last year, the country exported more than 404,000 metric tons of fish. The export earnings increased by over 17 million USD.

“Exports will be higher than those last year. The price of fish export is just Ks 1,271 USD per ton. In 2012, the price of fish export was around 1,700 USD per ton. Now the fish export price is relatively low even though the country can export more fishes. We need to review the fact whether a decline in fish export price is linked to the item or export volume,” Win Kyaing added.

Myanmar exports marine products to more than 40 countries like Thailand, China, Saudi Arabia and Japan.

Win Kyaing suggested that efforts should be made to produce value-added products as the price of fish is just 1,270 USD per ton.Myanmar exports more than 20 kinds of fishes.

Myanmar’s export earnings hit 482 million USD in 2014-2015 fiscal year, 502 million USD in 2015-2016 FY, 652 million USD in 2016-2017 FY and  over 680 million USD until March 19 in 2017-2018 FY. This is the highest marine export in a decade, according to the Fishery Department.
