Deputy Minister for Transport and Communications Kyaw Myo has said a detailed feasibility study is being conducted to build an elevated railroad in Yangon.

The deputy minister revealed the information in response to reporters' question over the elevated railway project during the recess of a parliamentary meeting of the Upper House held in Nay Pyi Taw on December 4.

"We are considering two elevated railways. We are coordinating with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It is just under discussion. But I mean we will implement the project," said the deputy minister.

He said that circular railroad is being upgraded while the Ministry of Construction is planning to implement an elevated road project to reduce severe traffic congestion in Yangon city.

The deputy minister said that government ministries would cooperate in implementing such projects adding that he wanted to see the project implementation as quickly as possible.

"The trains we will use are diesel electric ones. RBE trains will also be used. Japan is planning to send us diesel electric trains," said the deputy minister.

During a parliamentary session of the Lower House held last year, reporters asked Union Minister for Transport and Communications Thant Zin Maung if the government had any plan to implement an underground railway project in Yangon. He said there was a plan to build an elevated railroad in the city adding that there would be a meeting with Japanese officials in March.

He told the reporters that a subway project was currently impossible due to budget constraints.
