MON- Water level had receded in Ye and southern Ye Township, Mon State since yesterday morning but emergency aid are still urgently needed for rehabilitation efforts, according to the locals.

Due to the torrent caused by heavy rain, villages in Southern Ye Township, Mon State, were submerged since August 10th.

“If there is no rain, the water level will recede but there definitely will be rain and water from the mountains. Currently, heavy machineries are needed for rehabilitation. We are going to dig have to dig for new water routes. We have a plan to build a mini-dam to guard against the torrent from the mountain,” said Saw Win Soe from Mann Aung village, Khawzar Township, Ye.

Ko Shwe Zin from Kyaung Ywa village also said that there were a lot of timbers and bamboos in Kyaung Ywa village to rebuild. However, the main problem then becomes finance. If cash assistance would be provided to the locals, there would be secure enough accommodations.

“We experience floods every year but never on a level like this year. Water level has been rising since August 9th. I was still gathering my belongings when the water rose extremely quickly. I had to run to a high storied building. Now, the water level is nearly at my house’s roof. Even if the water goes down, mud will remain. Stuff from the back of my house was floating in the water. I’m going to need to repair my home when the water goes down,” said Mar Mar Wai from Kyaung Ywa village.

“We need clothes and to rebuild our homes. Currently, food is also an urgent need,” said Aye Thida Moe from Kyauk Mi Kyaung village.

“Flood occurred in Mann Aung Village, Khawzar Town, Ye Township. We need a lot of aid. The flood destroyed the main road of the village. We will need heavy machineries to rehabilitate the village,” Sayadaw Za Wunna from Mann Aung Monastery.

The monk, from Myanmar Social and Rescue Team, also said that they arrived in Ye Township on August 11th to carry out rescue activities. They are doing so together with the Ministry of Social, Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. In far off flood-hit areas, coordinated with the government staff is cricial.

They also have a plan to support aid in different rehabilitation efforts.

“Rain continuously poured down in Ye Township from August 1st to 10th. Thus the flooding due to the downpour from the mountain. This year’s flood caused damages downtown. Plans are underway now to carry out rehabilitation tasks together with the Township Disaster Management Committee, the Mon State Government Committee and other relevant ministries,” said Kan Win, administrator from Ye Township.

Due to the torrent caused by heavy rain, flooding took place in Ye and southern Ye Township, Mon State, since August 9th affecting and displacing thousands of victims.
