The water pumping work of the Upper Paunglaung hydroelectric plant, which was flooded and the power production had to stop, has been completed and the power production is being resumed, sources said.

The power plant with two 70 MW generators through the 230 KV upper Paunglaung-Nancho power line, produces about 454 million kilowatt-hours of electric power per year into the national power grip. Due to the effect of Typhoon Yagi that all the lower floors of the factory were flooded, the power production was stopped and the reconstruction work was carried out. It is reported that the construction of a temporary embankment and the pumping of water from the factory drainage canal have been completed and efforts are being made to increase the speed of power generation and distribution as soon as possible.

On January 25, U Nyan Tun, Union Minister for Electricity, and Dr Charli Than, Union Minister for Industry, observed and inspected the repair work of the power plant and machinery together with U Khin Maung Latt, member of the Nay Pyi Taw Council and officials of the department, in order to quickly produce power in the Upper Paunglaung hydroelectric plant, which was damaged due to flooding.

Union ministers and team observed and inspected the renovation works carried out on a floor-by-floor basis within the factory building, renovation of large generators and related equipment, testing and measuring of mechanical and electrical equipment to enable power generators to operate again, and the condition of the renovation process and the heating and pumping out of water. The union minister instructed to prepare work to begin installation of new machinery and maintain the places in an orderly manner.

After that, he reached the water storage dam site and inspected the condition of the water entered in the dam, water storage and the strength of the dam and the condition of the water from the drain pumped by engine-mounted water pumps and discharge of water from the water filter tank to the temporary embankment due to the speed of water entering in the factory, which caused the tailrace channel and spiral casing blocked by mud, sand, and stones, the condition of the mud, sand, and stones in the mouth of the water outlet, and the condition of digging out the mud, sand, and stones with manpower, and the water extracted from the bottom outlet and sent to the Lower Paunglaung plant, and ordered to pay special attention to workplace safety.
