The government has planned to spend Ks 2,175 billion, which is more than ever previous years, on Myanmar's education sector in 2018-2019 fiscal year as educational investment contributes most to long-term national development, said Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi.

The minister made the remark during an opening speech to mark World Teachers' Day which fell on October in Nay Pyi Taw.

"As education is the best investment in our efforts for long-term national development, the government has increased education spending year by year. Our yearly education budgets are Ks 1,726 billion in 2016-2017 FY, Ks 1,756 billion in 2017-2018 FY and Ks 2,175 billion this 2018-2019 FY," said the minister.

In its education reforms, the Ministry of Education is taking measures for development of human resources, emergence of intellectuals and intelligentsia, changes in school curriculums and syllabuses to catch up with the current system and age and providing of modern teaching aid.

Focus is also on upgrading and extension of school buildings, improvement of teacher quality and socio-economic development of teachers.

"No matter how we change our educational concepts, ambitions and systems, teachers play a key role in the whole education sector. In exerting nation-building efforts in accord with democratic practices, it is important that qualified and healthy human resources emerge," said Dr Myo Thein Gyi.
