Depression formed over South China Sea is likely to move to westwards and may cause rain in southern areas of Myanmar from January 4, said Hla Tun, deputy director of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

“It is not in effect now as the depression is still far away from Myanmar but it will arrive at the Gulf of Thailand on January 4. Southern areas of Myanmar will see rain. The low pressure area will cross the Malay Peninsula and reach the Andaman Sea. According to our output models, it may become a depression and move to westwards,” he said.

According to the observation made by the DMH on January 1, the tropical storm in South China Sea is centering about 330 miles southeast of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam and forecasted to move southwestwards.

“The storm will be in Bay of Bengal around January 7 or 8 and southern areas, eastern areas and lower Myanmar will have rain,” he said.

Sea will be slight to moderate in Myanmar waters. Wave height will be about 3-5 feet off and will have more rain in Shan State for next two days, said the DMH.
