Dengue fever transmission declines

High dengue fever cases are reported every other year but outbreaks of dengue from 2015 to 2018 have declined, according to the figures from the Ministry of Health and Sports. 

Till September 21 this year, 2,464 dengue cases and 24 dengue-related deaths were reported in Yangon. 

Dr. Nay Yi Yi Lin, Project Manager of  Dengue Prevention and Control Project said: “Kachin, Ayeywady and Yangon see the highest number of dengue deaths. In 2018, 3,649 dengue cases and 25 dengue-related deaths were reported in Yangon. The dengue transmission and death toll among children aged between five and nine is the highest. We are always monitoring the dengue transmissions. Between mid-June and September, outbreaks of dengue fever increased. It is a common dengue peak season in a year.”

Till September 21 this year, 18,320 dengue cases and 107 dengue-related deaths were reported nationwide. The dengue cases are reported mostly in Ayeyawady, Yangon, Mandalay, Kachin and Rakhine. Kachin tops the list with 2,904 dengue cases and 29 deaths. 

In 2018, 23,000 dengue cases and 112 deaths were reported nationwide, according to dengue prevention and control project. 

During five years from 1955 to 1959, there were 905 reported dengue cases around the globe. Beyond 2010, the global figures increased to over two million every year. In Myanmar, the number of dengue cases increased to over 40,000 in 2015 from over 6,000 in 1974-1976, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports. 

According to the WHO’s report, the globe sees a significant increase in the number of dengue cases. In 2017, there were 31,288 dengue cases and 192 deaths in Myanmar.
