The Ministry of Health and Sports is planning to expand the building of Daw Khin Kyi Women's Hospital and staff housing in the compound of Bahan Women's Hospital on Bogyoke Museum Street in Bahan Township, Yangon Region.

The extension is aimed at receiving more patients.

"Here, patients come not only from Bahan Township but also from other townships such as South Oakkala, North Oakkala, North Dagon, South Dagon, Hlinethaya, Htaukkyant and Hmawby. The number of patients is on the rise. The hospital now only provide 40 beds. About three days ago, the union minister visited the hospital. He told us that the ministry would plan to expand the hospital building and build new staff housing," said medical superintendent Dr Thin Yu Zaw from Daw Khin Kyi Women's Hospital.

Previously, the hospital was known as Bahan Women's Hospital. Healthcare was provided for pregnant women two times a week. At that time, natural births were only performed and for surgeries, patients were transferred to Central Women's Hospital.

Daw Khin Kyi Women's Hospital cornerstone was laid and started construction on August 22, 1933 and opened on September 1, 1934. It was transferred to Women and Child Care Organization on September 15, 1947 and renamed Tower Lane Women's Hospital.

The hospital was governed by a 13-member board chaired by Daw Khin Kyi. It was transferred to the Social Welfare Department in 1949 and then to the Ministry of Health in 1953.

About US$2 million was spent on upgrading Daw Khin Kyi Women's Hospital.
