Cyclone Mocha destroyed more than 62,800 acres of crops across Myanmar, and more than 56,000 acres of spring rice, spring sesame and green bean from Magway Region were destroyed, announced the Ministry of Information.

A total of 62,836 acres of cultivated crops in Rakhine State, which was hit by Cyclone Mocha, and Magway, Mandalay, Sagaing and Ayeyawady regions were destroyed.

The damaged crops include 605 acres of bananas, 1,345 acres of areca catechus, 58 acres of betel plants, 231 acres of thatch palm, 5 acres of pará rubber tree and 1,709 acres of orchards from Rakhine state, 109 acres of spring rice, 49,569 acres of spring sesame, 8 acres of winter sunflowers, 22 acres of rainy sunflowers and 6,766 acres of green bean from Magway Region, 350 acres of summer sesame and 17 acres of green bean from Mandalay Region, 902 acres of spring sesame and 1,065 acres of green bean from Sagaing Region, and 75 acres of bananas from Ayeyawady Region.

A total of 4,209 buffaloes, 7,666 cows, 2,295 pigs, 738 goats and 517,005 chickens were being killed in Rakhine State, which was hit by Mocha, and Bago, Magway and Ayeyawady regions.

The dead animals include 4,209 buffaloes, 7,593 cows, 2,283 pigs, 738 goats and 489,205 chickens from ten townships in Rakhine State, 24,500 chickens from Bago Region, three buffaloes, 73 cows and 12 pigs from six townships in Magway Region, and 3,300 chickens from two townships in Ayeyawady Region.

From May 13 to 15, although farmers from Magway Region were able to start cultivating crops such as groundnuts and sesame due to the rains affected by the Cyclone Mocha, many of the irrigated summer sesame and green bean fields were drowned and damaged, according to locals.

Oil crops such as groundnut and sesame are start cultivated in townships such as Aunglan, Taungdwingyi, Natmauk, Myothit, Magway, Yenangyoung, Chauk, Seikpyu, Minhla and Minbu in Magway Region. In this year's crop growing season, the price of a basket of peanuts has reached over 100,000 kyats, and the prices of fertilizers and agricultural chemicals are also on the rise.

"The rain enough to plant crops within two days. In order to plant with this good moisture, we face difficulties to find the workers and the cattle to plant in time. The prices of seeds and agricultural chemicals are too high, so it costs more than one million kyats to plant four baskets of peanuts," said a farmer from Minbu Township.

Many summer sesame and green bean fields in townships such as Minbu, Pwintbyu, salin and Seikpyu townships in west of the Ayeyawady River, were flooded and damaged due to the storm. It is reported that four people died and animals were killed due to the flooding of Salin River.
