Civil Societies Organizations (CSOs) formed a temporary committee for the complete cancellation of Myitsone Dam Project at an educative talk held in conjunction with the CSOs meeting, at the Free Funeral Service Association (Yangon) in North Dagon Township on February 3.

Soe Kyaw Thu, an in-charge of the committee said: “All CSOs discussed a plan to collectively work to seek way of how to listen to the voices echoed by the government and the opposition party. We have the same voice to remonstrate against the construction of Myitsone dam project after considering it a national duty. It is said to the distinct point that all concerned have the unity. The matters related to the duty assignment will be discussed at the second meeting. Our committee will showcase to what extent the people show opposition to the Myitsone dam project.”

Myint Zaw, Natural Disaster and Resource Management expert said: “There is the same word said by politicians, businessmen and those linked to opportunity. They said our country is poor as it has no energy. They have proposed to build the large-scale hydro power projects for necessary energy. According to my experience, I totally deny it. Due to the lack of energy and fairness, our people are in trouble. The people suffer the consequences of environmental degradation and forced land seizures. There are many other ways to get energy. One of efforts to really promote the life of people is to avoid the acts that may damage the natural environments on which many more people rely. We need to protect rivers, creeks, forests and lands for the survivals of fishermen and farmers who make up the majority of the population.”
