COVID-19 cases in Maubin prison reaches 106

Prison authorities found 106 people including inmates, staff from the Correctional Department and their family members from Maubin prison are infected with COVID-19 virus after they took a swab test for them till October 28, sources said.

An inmate receiving medical treatment at Maubin hospital on October 23 was found infected with COVID-19 virus on October 25, and the authorities took a swab test on the prison staff and inmates living with the positive inmate from October 26. They found 106 people were infected with the virus till October 28. The infected inmates are kept at an isolation ward in the prison and provided medical treatment. On October 28, two out of three inmates who are freed from the prison are found infected with the virus.

“We found 104 people were infected with the virus on October 26 and 27 and 11 of them are kept at a temporary hospital in a technical institute. The rest of them are kept at an isolation ward in the prison. They didn’t show any sign of the virus. If needed, we will send them to the hospital. We found two more inmates infected with the virus on October 28. We took a swab test on 258 people for three days and 106 of them are infected with the virus,” said Dr Thiha Aung, Deputy Head of Public Health Department for Ayeyawady Region.

Up to 1,068 people are infected with the virus in the region till 8 am on October 29 and 659 of them are allowed to be discharged from the hospital. The remaining are still in hospital receiving medical treatment.
