Tokyo: The Yomiuri Shimbun #AsiaNewsNetwork -

Models wearing designs by rising fashion talents strutted the runway Saturday in a show held at the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry building in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.

As part of the Cool Japan Strategy to further promote Japanese attractive arts, culture and other aspects abroad, the ministry has advanced efforts to support Japanese designers. This was the first proper fashion show held at a central government ministry.

The show was part of Tokyo Fashion Week with the 2019-20 autumn-winter collections, and was managed by Hidenori Kumakiri, a designer at the Japanese fashion brand named “beautiful people.”

About 380 people watched models walk the runway, which was set up in an auditorium on the second basement floor usually is used for meeting and other purposes. Thirty-eight designs were unveiled at the show this time.

The domestic market size of the apparel industry has shrunk to about ¥10 trillion on an annual basis, down from about ¥15 trillion in the early 1990s, and thus the ministry has been providing support for the rehabilitation of these businesses.
