The compilation of eligible voter lists across the country for 2020 General Election will come to an end at the end of this month, said Myint Naing, the Spokesperson of Union Election Commission (UEC).

“At the end of this month, we will get the grand total number of voters. We will make updates to the lists every month,” he continued.

The UEC has designated 2019 as the voter list compilation year for 2020 election. Till September since July, the UEC formed the teams for the compilation of eligible voters, in cooperation with the General Administration Department and the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population.

“The current stage is compilation. The release of voter lists is the next step. The UEC will make updates to the lists every month. It aims to get more accurate voter lists for 2020 election,” Myint Naing continued.

At a meeting with region/district election sub-commissions from Yangon Region on September 13, Union Election Commission Chair Hla Thein urged the officials, to make necessary preparations for the successful holding of 2020 election and to make sure that all eligible voters are included in the voter lists.

At a meeting with the political parties on August 23, UEC chair Hla Thein promised that the UEC was working to make sure that the 2020 Election becomes a good example. The reason is he believes that all members of election sub-commissions can perform their duties in accordance with the five standards—independence, fairness, transparency, acceptability and the election result which is synonymous with the people’s desires.

The UEC plans to hold a general election will be held in late 2020, but has not announced the exact date for it yet.
