Cherry tree planting ceremony held in Yangon

The third cherry tree planting ceremony to mark Myanmar-Japan Friendship was held in the compound of Yangon Region Government Office on January 27.

Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein said: “This festival aims to further promote amity and friendship between the people of the two countries. There emerges a cherry flower festival in Myanmar if cherry blossoms next three years. This festival would contribute a lot to Japan-Myanmar friendship and the inflows of tourists into the country.”

The cherry planting ceremonies are aimed at promoting amity and understanding among Myanmar and Japan youths. It can also attract more Japanese tourists to Nay Pyi Taw and aims to promote it to a tourist destination area.

The ceremony was attended by  Lower House Speaker, Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism, Union Minister for Ethnics Affairs, Yangon Region Chief Minister, deputy parliament speaker, MPs, the Japanese embassy in Myanmar, ambassadors from ASEAN countries and Chair of Japan-Myanmar Inter-parliamentary Friendship Association and representatives.

On January 29, 2017, the Myanmar State Counsellor attended the first cherry  tree planting ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw. A total of 100 cherry plants were grown at the ceremony.  A total of 200 cherry plants were grown at the second ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw on January 14, 2018.

In addition, 1250 cherry plants were grown in Chin State and 800 in Mogok, PyinOolwin, Kalaw and Inlae in January and February, 2018.
