Bean export earnings expected to hit one billion dollars

Export earnings from Beans and Pulses may reach up to one billion dollars, said Zaw Min Win, President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, at the 24th annual meeting of Myanmar Bean and Pulses and Sesame Merchants Association.

“We need to provide farmers with necessary inputs as well as to promote the quality of products, boost production and ensure high yields,” he added.

Myanmar mainly exports mung bean, pigeon pea and green gram to the overseas market. Myanmar mainly exports green gram to the EU and China. Myanmar earns about USD 800 million from exports of bean and pulses every year.

In August, 2018, the price of mung bean dropped to Ks 450,000 per ton as India banned the imports of mung bean and pigeon pea from Myanmar.

The price of Mung bean has increased slightly as India imported Mung bean from Myanmar since late September, 2018, according to the Myanmar Bean and Pulses and Sesame Merchants Association.

Min Ko Oo, secretary of the Myanmar Bean and Pulses and Sesame Merchants Association said: “Due to high demands from India, the price of Mung bean increased to Ks one million per ton. Now the price of Mung bean has dropped to less than Ks 800,000 per ton.”

Dr. Than Myint, Union Minister for Commerce said: “For trade promotion, the export sector should  promote the quality and quantity of products.
