Bago prison under lockdown after 77 more prisoners infected with Covid-19

Bago Prison has been under lockdown after 77 more prisoners more have been infected with Covid-19, said the prison warden. 

First, 56 prisoners tested positive for Covid-19 on January 1 and one of them died. Then, 169 prisoners including the infected ones were transferred to Kyaiksakaw Prison near Daik-U.

They were sent there in 10 vehicles including seven prison vans and two security cars. The deceased was a 22-year-old man. 

Of the latest 77 infected prisoners, 74 had PCR tests and four RDT tests, according to Bago Township Health Department. A total of 133 prisoners including 56 on January 1 have been infected with Covid-19.

“Even I am not allowed to enter the prison building. Nothing can be sent from outside. If want to do so, we have to report first. All food has been stockpiled inside before the lockdown,” the prison warden said.  

Bagon Township reported 100 Covid-19 cases on January 7 alone bringing the total number of cases to 2,713. There have been 21 deaths.
