Average inflation rate increases at the beginning of fiscal year

The average inflation rate increased for eight consecutive months from March to November last year, according to the Ministry of Planning and Finance.

In 2018-2019 fiscal year, the annual inflation rate was expected to reach 4.10 per cent and the average inflation rate, 4.81 per cent.

From April to November, 2018, the country saw an increase in the inflation rate for eight consecutive year. Until November last year, the average inflation rate was 6.66 per cent, a slight increase compared with the 6.34 per cent in October, according to the report on consumer price index and inflation rate released by the Central Statistical Organization.

In the past, the CSO used 2006 as a base year for the calculation of the CPI. Now the CSO calculates the CPI using 2012 as a base year. In November 2012, the CSO conducted household income and consumption surveys of 32669 households in 82 townships.

In November last year, Mandalay saw the biggest change in the average inflation rate with 11.50 per cent, followed by Rakhine State with 10.78 per cent and Magway Region with 9.11 per cent.

Until November last year, Magway Region saw the biggest annual inflation rate with 12.36 per cent and Ayeyawady Region, the least change with 4.82 per cent.
