Due to the suspension of fruit market on Myanmar-China border following the spread of coronavirus in China, the authorities will help local farmers sell watermelon and sweet melons in Yangon, according to the Commerce Ministry.

For the convenience of farmers and minimizing their losses, a discussion was held between Commerce Ministry, Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization, Consumer Affairs Department, Agriculture Department, Fishery Department, Myanmar Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association, Myanmar Watermelon and Sweet Melon Producers and Exporters Association and Myanmar Highway Freight Transportation Service Entrepreneurs Association.

The YCDC secretary said in order that farmers can sell watermelons and sweet melons on local market and overseas market, the YCDC will help them open the shops and carry out the door-to-door sale in Yangon.

The Chair of Myanmar Highway Freight Transportation Service Entrepreneurs Association said the association will arrange the transport and storage of water melons and sweet melons.

According to a statement on 27 January, there is a huge stockpile of fruits at Muse 105th mile trade zone due to the suspension of trade routes to China.
