All basic education schools across Myanmar have closed until a further notice is released, said Dr Tin Maung Win, deputy director general of the Basic Education Department.

He said they had been closed again under the directive from the Covid-19 Prevention and Control Committee (Central).

“The central committee instructed the regional governments and the Ministry of Education to close all the schools. We don’t know why they would be closed. We haven’t received any letters. So we have instructed education officers to close 6,526 schools including monastic education schools tomorrow (August 27),” Dr Tin Maung Win said.

When contacted, Yangon Region Minister for Social Affairs Naing Ngan Lin told The Daily Eleven that schools in the region would close temporarily.

He said 408 high schools and 189 private schools will close as of August 27 (today).

“They will have to close again as of tomorrow. But it will be temporary. The Basic Education Department contacted and said so. The government and private schools that opened on July 21 will close again. A letter will come,” the minister said.
