All rural areas in Yangon Region to enjoy electricity by December

A full percentage of people living in rural areas of Yangon Region will have access to electricity by the end of December this year, said Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein.

The chief minister disclosed the information during the inauguration of Gyobyu and Theingon power sub-stations in Taikkyi Township, which were built by Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation with the region government’s budget for 2019-2020 fiscal year, on November 22, the Ministry of Information reported.

Speaking at the opening of 33/11 kV, 5 MVA Theingon power sub-station, the chief minister said the construction of those power sub-stations would benefit over 800 households in 12 villages.  

The Yangon Region government, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy and the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation are working together to ensure that people and industries alike enjoy enough electricity by building more power stations and sub-stations, he said.

Phyo Min Thein also laid out the government’s plan to provide electricity for all rural areas of the region by the end of this year.

A total of 13 power sub-stations were built in Yangon Region in 2019-2020 FY with the fund of the region government. Of them, six power sub-stations are in northern Yangon District.

Out of the six stations, the two power sub-stations of Yekyaw and Warnet Chaung in Hmawbi Township, and another two of Kyutaw and Thetthitkyun in Htantabin Township have been commissioned into service, and the last two of Gyobyu and Theingon were opened November 22 this year. All of the sub-stations are 33/11 KV, 5 MVA.

Also present on the occasion were Yangon Region Parliament Speaker Tin Maung Tun and Deputy Speaker Lin Naing Myin, Yangon Region Minister for Electricity, Industry, Transport and Communication Nilar Kyaw, Yangon Region ministers, Lower House MPs, Region Parliament members, Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation’s chairman, officials and staff, invited guests and local people.
