About 900 Myanmar workers at Covid-19 temporary hospital in Mahachai

There are about 900 Myanmar migrant workers receiving treatment at a temporary hospital for Covid-19 in Mahachai, Thailand, according to Aid Alliance Committee (AAC) helping the workers there.

The workers at the hospital opened at a football field in Mahachai are reportedly in good health without symptoms.

AAC chairman Khaing Gyi said the virus infected migrant workers from the Mahachai prawn market are being sent to temporary hospitals since early January.

Those in contact with the infected workers at the locked down market are being separated. Separation will be categorized into three colours—white, black and red. Those uninfected are white, those infected and due to be sent to hospital red and those who have recovered black.

Lockdown was imposed in Mahachai on December 21 after the Covid-19 resurgence and the lockdown period was extended on January 4.

To curb virus spreading in Samut Sakhon Province, Thai authorities has banned on foreign workers’ movement since December 21.

Over 4,000 Myanmar workers are being stranded in the province, Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

According to the Thai Ministry of Health, more than 1,700 Myanmar migrant workers have been infected with the coronavirus in Mahachai.

Till January 3, the province saw over 1,900 people infected with Covid-19 and over 1,700 of them are Myanmar workers.

On January 4, a protest occurred after over 30 infected Myanmar workers brought back to the lockdown area from their hospital.

Thai authorities have been speeding up testing after a 68-year-old Thai from the prawn market in the province got a fever and tested positive for Covid-19 on December 13.
