A slight quake hits Myanmar on Dec 26

A slight earthquake of 4.1  Richter Scale with its epicenter inside Myanmar (about 8 miles west-southwest of Chibwe), latitude 25.87°N, longitude 98.00°E, depth 10 kilometers, about 51 miles northeast of Myitkyina seismological observatory was recorded on December 26, 2019, announced the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

“The quake hit about eight miles away from Chibwe and near the Sagaing Fault line. Normally, no strong quake hits near Chibwe. It is not affected by the Kabaw Fault line,” said Dr Kyaw Moe Oo, Director General of the DMH.

Another slight quake of 4.6 Richter Scale with its epicenter inside Myanmar about 10 miles southwest of Htichaing on December 25, announced the DMH.

Sagaing Fault, a 600-mile long fault stretching from north to south and Myanmar, also has small faults in addition to Kyaukkyan and Kabaw faults.

The quake is a danger which cannot be expected in advance. People need to check buildings and furniture to avoid casualties and government departments have to be alerted to respond and prepare, said experts.
