Myanmar exports 700,000 viss (approx 1143 tonnes) of freshwater carp to Bangladesh every month via Maungdaw border, said Win Kyaing, general secretary of Myanmar Fisheries Federation.

"Every month, 200,000 viss of carp goes to Bangladesh through maritime route and 500,000 viss by road through Maungdaw border trade camp. Export by car is faster. However, there is a problem with Bangladesh. They are in need of fish rations because that country has a large population. I don't know about other kinds of rations. But they have to rely on us for fish. They have to continue their dependence on us. They cannot produce many fish. But we can do it," said Win Kyaing.

In November, 199,000 kilos of carp worth US$184,410 was exported to Bangladesh through Maungdaw border, according to Maungdaw Border Merchants Association.

According to monthly data, over 90,000 kilos of carp was exported to Bangladesh in June, over 220,000 kilos in July, over 330,000 kilos in August, nearly 300,000 kilos in September and over 385,000 kilos in October.

In November, Maungdaw border trade camp exported carp, various kinds of dried fish, rice, bamboo and other regular products.
