6.5 pc of population has Hepatitis B

The 6.5 per cent of the total population suffer from Hepatitis B and 2.7 per cent, Hepatitis C, said Professor Dr. Win Win Swe, Dean of Hepatology Department at North Okkalapa People’s Hospital. 

Millions of people in Myanmar suffer from Hepatitis B and C. In fact, the number of patients who meet the doctors at hospitals and clinics is relatively low. Only 10 per cent of patients arrive at hospitals and clinics. 

According to the WHO’s research, around 150 million population around the world suffer from Hepatitis C. Of them, around 80 million patients have to suffer from chronic disease and Cirrhosis Liver. Around 19.4 million people die of Hepatitis C in the globe every year. 

Ministry of Health and Sports gives Hepatitis B vaccine to the babies free of charge. The ministry opened the Hepatitis B treatment centers at seven people’s hospitals in Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw in 2017 and at the people’s hospitals in Myikyina and Mawlamyine. The ministry gives free medical treatment to patients there. 

“We educate the people about Hepatitis C as Hepatitis C is transmitted through blood. There is no vaccine for Hepatitis C. But Hepatitis C can be treated. There is a vaccine for Hepatitis B.
