Myanmar's access to electricity has increased by about 10 percent over the past three months as 44 percent of households nationwide have been electrified, said Dr Tun Naing, deputy minister for electricity and energy.

"In March 2016, 34 percent of households had access to electricity. Up to February this year, 4.8 million households enjoy electricity so we now have 44 percent. Electricity consumption has increased by about 10 percent in 10 years," said the deputy minister.

State-run newspapers featured the information released by the ministry during a briefing on its activities within the third year.

Electricity availably is also targeted to reach 55 percent by 2020-2021 fiscal year. The percentage is then to reach 75 percent by 2025-2026, and 100 percent by 2030-2031.

During a ceremony to open a gas-fired 225-megawatt power plant in Myingyan Township on March 16 this year, Union Minister for Electricity and Energy Win Khaing said over 50 percent of households in the country would have access to electricity by November 2019.

"Myanmar has 10.877 million households. Up to November 2018, about 4.709 million households (43 percent) have been electrified so 6.168 million households (57 percent) have not had access to electricity. The ministry is doing its best to extend electricity by spending both union and regional funds. By November 2019, more than 50 percent will enjoy electricity," said the minister.
