Tokyo Skytree in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, is illuminated in a new orange shade for the first time on Thursday, ahead of the fifth anniversary of the tower’s opening next Monday. The illumination is called “nobori,” inspired by the noboribata banner-flags used for festive and celebratory occasions. The Skytree will be lit up orange for five nights through Monday; after that, the color will join light blue “iki” (stylish), inspired by the Sumidagawa river, and bluish purple “miyabi” (elegance) in daily rotation.
