Myanmar is planning to attract 7.5 million tourists in 2020, according to Ministry of Hotel and Tourism.

The ministry is setting out a master plan to attract tourists with six factors: transforming policies and organisations, amending the Tourism Law, preserving natural resources and culture, expanding infrastructure, preserving tourist attractions and developing human resources.

“We are making arrangements with a seven-year master plan. It is a plan targeting all sectors to develop,” said a ministry official.

The master plan is being developed by the ministry, Myanmar Tourism Federation, Norwegian government and its partner organisations since 2013.

The ministry predicted tourism growth with more than 20 million visitors between 2013 and 2020.

It was also predicted that Myanmar would top a list measuring tourism development between 2015 and 2025, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council.

The council studied tourist income and the proportion of GDP made by the industry, the growth rate of the industry, the creation of career opportunities, investment and exports compared with 180 countries. It said Myanmar would top the list by 2025.
