Mount Saramati in Sagaing Region has potential for nature tourism, according to the regional tourism development committee.
The mountain has potential as a must-go destination for adventure travellers and climbers, advocates said.
Committee member Than Htay said: “We’re trying to establish a national park at the mountain, and it’s a potential site for nature tourism,” said committee member Than Htay.
A study will be launched to come up with a plan to provide access to and promote the mountain’s hidden attractions.
“To make the mountain a destination for nature tourism, we have to build roads to it,” he said, adding that the region would involve residents and MPs in discussions of how to develop the park.
“The forest isn’t yet protected and we need to do that first,” Than Htay said, noting that the government had promised to help with the designation.
The mountain is located in the Naga self-administered zone in Sagaing and can be accessed through Leshi Township.
The temperature in the cold season reportedly dips below zero on the mountain.
