Bagan-Angkor flights proposed

Talks are underway to open direct flights between Bagan and Cambodia’Siem Reap, sources say.

An official at the Bagan Nyaung-U airport in Mandalay Region said: “The plan was initiated by State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi when she visited Cambodia. We had talks between the two governmentsThe exact plan has yet to be released. We’re now installing immigration equipment at the airport.

Tour guide Zaw Win Cho said: “I heard they are planning direct flights between Bagan and Cambodia. So we can expect more visitors. But the hotels in Bagan should be more affordable.”

Many airlines are interested in international flights to Bagan, according to the tourism sector sources. 

A tour operator said over 5 million visitors entered Cambodia annually and well over half of them went to Siem Reap for the historic city of Angkor.
