18th Asian Games competition opens today

The opening ceremony of 18th Asian Games also known as Jakarta Palembang 2018, or pan-Asian multisport event will be held today in Jakarta, Indonesia. The biggest sporting event in Asia is scheduled to take place from August 18th to September 2nd.

The Indonesian capital of Jakarta will held majority of the competitions including opening and closing ceremonies. For the first time ever, the Asian Games are being co-hosted in two cities; the Indonesian capital of Jakarta which will be hosting the Games for the very first time since 1962, and Palembang, the capital of the south Sumatra province. Events will be held in and around the two cities, including venues in Bandaung and province of west Java and Banten.

About 10,000 athletes from 45 countries are expected to compete for 463 gold medals in 40 sports and 67 disciplines during the pan-Asian multisport event.

Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, built in 1960, was completed in January. It can now accommodate up to 80,000 spectators, compared with 90,000 previously, due to the installation of single-seat system. The venue will be used for both football and other athletics events during this year's Asian Games.

The opening and closing ceremonies of 1962 Asian Games were also held at the Bung Karno Main Stadium.

Myanmar will compete in eight out of 40 sporting events at the 18th Asian Games to be held in Indonesia. The eight events Myanmar will be competing in are Football, Archery, Shooting, Sepak Takraw, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Wushu and Rowing. Myanmar is keeping its expectations to a certain limit with gold medals expected from Rowing, Sepak Takraw and Wushu while not keeping expectations low towards other games. However Myanmar will nevertheless send its best athletes to gain valuable international experience.

Myanmar athlete Zaw Lwin Tun will hold the Myanmar Flag. Myanmar U-23 football team is still tentative on attending the opening day event as they have to move on to their lodging on August 18. Besides, athletes who will be competition on August 19 will not be attending opening event and only some of the athletes and coaches will attend the opening event.

Myanmar had received two gold, one silver and one bronze medals at the last edition of this competition in Incheon, South Korea.
