Myanmar beat Singapore 2-0 in the opening Group A match of the 2017 SEA Games held in Malaysia on August 14.

Striker Aung Thu scored both goals, and Myanmar is favored to advance into the semifinal stage.

Myanmar fielded a strong squad, and Aung Thu scored his first goal at close range from the penalty area before halftime.

Maung Maung Lwin missed a header shot when the ball hit the bar after the first goal. Singapore was determined for a comeback, but their hopes were dashed when Aung Thu scored his second goal of the tournament in the 61st minute, assisted by Maung Maung Lwin.

Aung Ko Win, patron of the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF), awarded US$30,000 to the Myanmar U-22 team. MFF Chairman Zaw Zaw and Yangon United owner Tay Za each awarded $10,000 to the team.

Myanmar also won its opening match at the 2015 SEA Games and advanced to take silver in the football championship that year.
