Parliamentary Speaker Thura Shwe Mann has met representatives of the Kokang self-administered region to discuss forming an official committee to end the conflict there.

The Speaker summoned the meeting on February 19 with Laukkai MP Kyaw Ni Naing, Konkyan MP Gangte Won and Lugwon Shi MP of Shan State's no.11 constituency.

"A committee is to be formed of representatives from the government, army, political parties, MPs, Kokang ethnic businessmen and cultural organisations. The Speaker said the clashes would end in a few days," said MP Kyaw Ni Naing.

Thura Shwe Mann announced that he would work to rehabilitate the region after this month’s fighting.

Meanwhile, humanitarian organisations expect the number of refugees leaving Laukkai to increase.
