Ayeyawady Region parliamentarians demanded on March 15 the prosecution of civil servants who abuse their power.

The Wakema MP Htay Aung submitted a proposal to prosecute staff who abused their power.

Other MPs supported the proposal.

MP Myint Myint San said: “Civil servants' salaries come from the public finances. They should serve for the public well-being. However, they take advantage on the public by abusing their power. Such people have to be punished and they have to be fired.”

Pathein MP Dr Soe Win said staff who violated the law were just given a warning by their superiors. The Ayeyawady regional government should address punishments, the MP said.

Tharbaung MP Khin Moe Wah said: “The executive branch is very important for state building. Corrupt staff working with the executive contaminates the whole cabinet.”

Parliamentarians reported on illegal gambling and bars, illegal loans, especially those to farmers, court cases settled with bribes and illicit log trading.
