The Peace Process Working Team (PPWT) representing eight ethnic NCA signatories met with Sun Guoxiang, Special Envoy for Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Chinese Embassy to Myanmar in Yangon on February 12.
Present on the occasion were five members of Sun Guoxiang-led Chinese delegation, Phado Saw Tardo Mu, general secretary of the Karen National Union (KNU), Colonel Sai Ngan, secretary-3 of the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA), Salai Hta La Lay, general secretary of Chin National Front (CNF) and Saw Mya Yaza Lin, CEC member of the Arakan Liberation Party (ALP).
“We exchanged views. All are trying to push ahead with the peace process while the country’s politics is going ahead. But we have found hold-ups,” Saw Mya Yaza Lin said.
“Especially, national-level political dialogues have not been seen in Shan and Rakhine States. The next two members are the NMSP and the LDU to sign the NCA. We want the Chinese government to try to persuade ethnic armed organisations to gather at the peace table.”
Sun Guoxiang said: “The Chinese government is closely monitoring the Myanmar peace process with goodwill. The leaders of the ethnic armed organisations are invited to observe policies and attitudes toward the tribes.”
Saw Mya Yaza Lin added: “We discussed matters relating to Northern Alliance, especially the current situation in Rakhine State. Only if the problems are solved through the best way, can we go democratically. We also talked on the conflict taking place in Rakhine State.”
