Suu Kyi meets with the Sultan of Brunei

State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi met with Hassanal Bolkiah, King Sultan of Brunei on the afternoon of October 7 at Istana Nural Imam Palace in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

Both leaders discussed promoting bilateral relations, along with energy, education and health sectors, the Ministry said.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kyaw Tin, Myanmar Ambassador to Brunei Cho Tun Aung and Deputy Director General Aung Ko from the Ministry’s Political Department also attended the meeting.

Suu Kyi also met with Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng, a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade and his wife at a government guesthouse on the morning of October 7. No information was released about that meeting.

Suu Kyi also met with staff and families of the Myanmar embassy in Brunei on the same day at the Ambassador’s home. They discussed education, health and social matters, the Ministry announcement said.

The previous day, October 6, Suu Kyi paid a visit to Brunei Darussalam to attend the Golden Jubilee gala of King Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah’s succession to the throne.

The Myanmar delegation that night attended a dinner party marking King Sultan’s succession. They joined with presidents, vice presidents, prime ministers, deputy prime ministers, and royal family members from Europe and the Middle East countries, along with special guests.

Suu Kyi held a private meeting with King Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah at the VIP guest hall of the International Convention Center in Manila, Philippines after attending the 30th Asean Summit held in the Philippines in April 2017.

They discussed promoting bilateral relations and increasing cooperation in agriculture and energy at that time.
