State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will deliver an address to the country about the current situations on September 19, said Zaw Htay, the director-general of the Ministry of State Counsellor Office at a press conference held in the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw on the evening of Septemebr 13.

In replying to the question raised by a reporter from the Irrawaddy, Zaw Htay said: “There are four reasons why State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi cancelled her plan to attend the UN General Assembly. Another point is security matter. The cancellation of her tour would not amount to confessing to accusations. She will deliver a State of the Union address on national reconciliation and peace next week. We will invite local and foreign media. We have already told the Foreign Affairs Ministry about the issuance of visa in order that foreign reporters can get visa easily. The Information Ministry is also urged to invite all media. The move is to explain the truth to the world. It will be broadcast live. We have invited diplomats from embassies based in Thailand and New Delhi in addition to diplomats from foreign embassies in Myanmar.”

“There are four reasons why she cancelled her trip. The first one is ARSA terror attacks occurred in Maungdaw Township in Rakhine State. In the attacks, Muslims, Hindus, Rakhine, Dainet, Mro and indigenous people were killed and injured.  They have to flee to safer places. Bengalis move to the north while ethnics flee to the south, even to Sittwe. We have planned to collect the displaced in seven places. We have to give humanitarian aid to them immediately. The second point is there are anti-government protests that may lead to racial and religious conflicts like the Taungdwingyi case. We have to pay special attention to stability. The third point is we have got information about possible terror attacks in big cities and have to take tight security measures. The fourth point is President U Htin Kyaw has been in hospital in Bangkok of Thailand. We already released a statement that his surgery was successful. The State Counsellor prepared to attend the UN General Assembly. But she has to cancel it due to circumstances. The Vice-President will attend the UN General Assembly on behalf of the State Counsellor,” Zaw Htay added.
