Police crackdown on a protest camp in Chanmyathazi Township.

According to Mandalay Region branch of the Ma Ba Tha group, monks that have been arrested in the recent anti-government protest are indeed real monks.

The protest that had requested the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party to step down in Mandalay was widely criticized by many  who claimed that protest organizers had paid money to and employed fake monks.

However, according to a spokesperson from the self-proclaimed patriotic and nationalist group, they were all in fact officially registered clergy men.

“All of the six monks arrested are Ngal Phyu monks. None of them, as rumors are on the internet and in general, are fake monks,” said the spokesperson.

He claimed that one person was a member of Ma Ba Tha, four were from the Union of Patriotic Monks, and one was unaffiliated with any patriotic groups.
